About Westminster, Colorado

Westminster, Colorado is a Home Rule Municipality that’s located in both Adams and Jefferson Counties. It lies just northwest of Denver and it’s approximately 9 miles north, northwest of the state capitol.

Recent census data estimates that the current population is nearly 115,000, which makes Westminster the 7th most populous city in the state. In the summer if 2006, Money Magazine ranked Westminster among the top 25 places to live in the United States.


Westminster firs garnered national attention in the late 1850s after gold was discovered in the South Platte River Valley. The first permanent settler built his home near what is today known as West 76th and Lowell Street in 1879. From there, the area quickly attracted other settlers, including a prominent horse breeder who was instrumental in helping to construct the town’s train depot in the early 1880s.

Census data estimates there are nearly 40,000 households in the city of Westminster, 27,000 of which consist of families. The racial make up is approximately 85 percent Caucasian, 15.5 percent Hispanic or Latino, 1.25 percent African American, 5.5 percent Asian, 5.5 percent Pacific Islander, with the remaining residents being from other races.

The median income household income in Westminster is about $57,000, while the median income for a family was reported at $65,000.  Approximately 27 percent of residents are under the age of 18, while the median age is 33 years.
