About Commerce City, Colorado

Commerce City is among the area’s numerous Home Rule Municipalities; with more than 46,000 residents, it’s ranked as the 18th most populous municipality in the state.

The city is a mix of residential neighborhoods and industrial communities. A local oil refinery, that has a capacity of more than 90,000 barrels of oil per day, is operated by Suncor.


There is also a large soccer stadium located in Commerce City, which hosts the Major League Soccer team the Colorado Rapids.

Commerce City started to attract settlers in the late 1860s after John. D. Henderson built a ranch, hotel and trading post just north of Denver. One of the fist establishments within the city’s limits was a cemetery. The Riverside Cemetery, for example, was founded in 1876. The Rose Hill Cemetery was established in the early 1890s.

The first school in Commerce City, which began as a one-room school house, was opened in 1871; other schools began to open toward the close of the century.

The area was devoted to agriculture until the late 1920s, at which point industry began to move in. A refinery was established in 1930 and grain elevators were built toward the end of that same decade. The Rocky Mountain arsenal was founded several years later just east of the budding community.

Recent census data estimates that more than 22,000 people live in Commerce City and it’s believed that about 5,000 families live within the city’s limits. The median household income is about $35,000 while the median income for a family living in this community is just shy of $40,000. The median age in Commerce City is 20 years old, and it’s believed that less than 15 percent of the population is under the age of 18.

Approximately 9.5 percent of the population is over the age of 65.
