About Colorado Springs
Denver may be the best-known city in Colorado, but by city area, Colorado Springs is the largest. The city is located on the eastern part of the state, along Fountain Creek, and it’s about 60 miles south of the Colorado State Capital.
It’s also worth noting that Colorado City is just over a mile above sea level, which means its altitude is higher than Denver. Locals note that the city is home to two dozen national governing bodies of sport, including USA Hockey and the United States Olympic Committee.
Recent census data shows the city’s current population is nearly 470,000 residents, which make it the second most populous city in the state. It’s also ranked as the 40th most populous city in the nation.

An interesting fact about Colorado City is that while state voters move to approve Amendment 64 in 2013, which legalized recreational marijuana sales and use in the state, the local city council voted to prohibit retail shops within the city’s limits.
Medical marijuana shops, however, are still permitted to operate in Colorado Springs. In late July, 2017, a publication called the Cannabist ran an article that suggested the city was losing more than 25 million dollars each year, in fees and tax revenue, due to the ban on recreational marijuana sales.
Yet that’s not to say the city doesn’t have a bustling economy. Colorado Springs is home to several defense industry and high-tech companies. Verizon Business, Hewlett-Packard, Broadcom, Cypress Semiconductor, Boeing, General Dynamics, SAIC, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman all have offices in the city.
